500 Dalton Rule

A guideline stating that molecules larger than 500 Daltons cannot penetrate the skin barrier.

A

Acid mantle

A thin, slightly acidic film on the skin’s surface composed of sebum and sweat. It helps protect the skin from harmful microorganisms, regulates enzyme activity, and supports barrier function.

Acne-prone skin

A skin type characterized by frequent breakouts due to excess sebum production, clogged pores, and bacterial overgrowth. Typically associated with oily skin, acneic skin is sensitive to hormonal fluctuations, skincare products, and environmental stressors.

Acnegenic

Ingredients that can trigger or worsen acne by causing inflammation, irritation, or congestion in the skin.

Active Ingredients (Actives)

Functional ingredients in skincare formulations which exert biological effect on skin (such as exfoliants, retinoids, or antioxidants) and provide targeted treatment for specific concerns, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin texture by influencing skin functions like cell turnover, collagen production, pigmentation, and inflammation.

Adipocytes

Fat cells found in the dermis and hypodermis that store energy in the form of triglycerides.

Aging (Chronoaging and Photoaging)

Aging refers to the natural and environmental processes that lead to gradual changes in the skin’s structure and appearance over time. Chronoaging, also called intrinsic aging, is the genetically programmed, inevitable aging process influenced by time and biological factors. Photoaging, or extrinsic aging, is caused by cumulative sun exposure and environmental damage, leading to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and loss of elasticity. Both processes often overlap and contribute to the visible signs of skin aging.

Allantoin

A calming, anti-irritant compound derived from comfrey that supports skin healing.

Aloe vera

A plant extract known for hydrating, soothing, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)

Water-soluble exfoliants that help resurface the skin by removing dead skin cells.

Amphoteric surfactants

Mild surfactants used in cleansers that balance positive and negative charges to reduce irritation.

Ampoules

Highly concentrated serums designed for short-term, intensive skincare treatments.

Androgens

Male sex hormones that stimulate sebaceous gland activity and are implicated in acne.

Anionic surfactants

Strong surfactants used in cleansers that can be drying or irritating (e.g., SLS, SLES).

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs)

Proteins produced by keratinocytes that help defend against pathogenic bacteria.

Antioxidant

A substance that protects the skin from oxidative stress and neutralizes free radicals.

Apocrine sweat glands

Sweat glands associated with hair follicles, mainly in the armpits and groin, producing odorless sweat that becomes odorous after bacterial interaction.

Arbutin

A skin-brightening ingredient derived from hydroquinone, known to reduce dark spots and pigmentation.

Arrector pili muscles

Small muscles attached to hair follicles that cause goosebumps by contracting.

Astringent

A compound that temporarily tightens skin, reduces oiliness, and minimizes pore appearance, often containing alcohol or tannins and commonly found in toners and alcohol-based products. Overuse can lead to excessive dryness and irritation.

Atrophic scars

Depressed scars caused by collagen destruction, commonly following severe acne.

Avobenzone

A chemical (organic) UV filter that provides broad UVA protection but needs stabilization due to low photostability.

Azelaic acid

A dicarboxylic acid that reduces hyperpigmentation, treats acne, and soothes inflammation. Effective for post-inflammatory discoloration.

B

Bacterial overgrowth

An imbalance where skin bacteria proliferate excessively, contributing to conditions like acne.

Balancing

A skincare approach aimed at managing both oily and dry zones in combination skin.

Bar Cleansers

Solid cleansing agents; traditional soap bars are alkaline while syndet bars are pH-balanced and milder.

Barrier function

The skin’s natural defense system preventing water loss and protecting against pathogens and environmental damage.

Barrier repair

Skincare strategies aimed at restoring and strengthening the skin’s protective lipid barrier.

Basal keratinocytes

Keratinocytes located in the basal layer (stratum basale) of the epidermis, responsible for new cell production.

Beige adipocytes

Fat cells capable of switching between energy storage and heat generation, contributing to metabolic regulation.

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO)

A powerful acne treatment that kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and prevents pore clogging.

Beta hydroxy acid (BHA)

Oil-soluble exfoliants, such as salicylic acid, that penetrate pores to clear blockages and reduce acne.

Beta-glucans

Polysaccharides from oats that hydrate the skin, soothe irritation, and promote barrier recovery.

Beta-lipohydroxy acid (BLHA)

A derivative of salicylic acid offering slower penetration and gentler exfoliation for sensitive skin.

Biocellulose mask

A sheet mask made from fermented fibers that adheres closely to the skin for superior absorption.

Biotech Beauty

A skincare approach utilizing lab-grown and bioengineered ingredients for stability and sustainability.

Blackhead (Open Comedone)

A clogged pore open to the air, where oxidation of sebum causes a dark appearance.

Blemish

A general term for skin imperfections such as pimples, blackheads, and cysts.

Breakouts

Collections of blemishes including blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and cysts.

Brightening agents

Ingredients that inhibit melanin production to even out skin tone and reduce dark spots.

Broad-spectrum protection

Sunscreen protection that covers both UVA and UVB radiation effectively.

Brown adipocytes

Fat cells specialized in generating heat through thermogenesis, prevalent in infancy.

C

Carbonated water

A gentle cleansing alternative that uses carbonated water to lightly exfoliate and regulate oil production, suitable for combination skin.

Cationic surfactants

Mildly harsh surfactants used in some cleansers, offering antimicrobial properties but with potential to irritate sensitive skin.

Cellulite

A cosmetic condition on the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen, where fat deposits push through connective tissue in the dermis, creating a dimpled skin appearance.

Centella asiatica

A medicinal plant extract rich in compounds that soothe, repair, and strengthen the skin barrier, often used for sensitive and damaged skin.

Ceramides

Lipid molecules naturally found in the skin, crucial for maintaining the integrity, hydration, and protection of the barrier function.

Chemical (Organic) UV filters

Lightweight, colorless compounds that absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. Typically used in combination for broad-spectrum protection. Some may cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive skin.

Chemical barrier

The skin’s first line of chemical defense involving the acid mantle, enzymes, and antimicrobial peptides to protect against environmental stressors.

Chemical sunscreen

Sunscreen using organic filters that absorb UV radiation and transform it into heat, often lightweight and easy to wear.

Chronological Aging (Chronoaging)

Chronoaging, also called intrinsic aging, is the genetically programmed, inevitable aging process influenced by time and biological factors. It is the natural aging process determined by genetics and time, distinct from external aging caused by environmental factors like UV radiation.

Circadian rhythms of skin

The daily biological cycles that regulate skin processes such as barrier repair, sebum production, and sensitivity, peaking at different times of day.

Clay mask

A skincare treatment made with absorbent clays to purify the skin by drawing out excess oils and impurities, ideal for oily or congested skin.

Cleansers

Products designed to remove dirt, makeup, sunscreen, and sebum without compromising the skin’s natural barrier when appropriately formulated.

Cleansing balms

Oil-based semi-solid cleansers that dissolve heavy makeup, sunscreen, and impurities, forming the first step in double cleansing routines.

Clogged Pores (Pore Congestion)

The buildup of dead skin cells, sebum, and debris within pores, often leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and dull texture.

Closed comedone

A non-inflamed clogged pore trapped beneath the surface of the skin, commonly referred to as a whitehead.

Collagen

The main structural protein in the dermis responsible for skin strength, firmness, and elasticity, declining naturally with age.

Combination skin

A skin type where oiliness and dryness coexist, typically with an oily T-zone and drier cheeks and jawline.

Comedogenic

Ingredients or products that have the potential to clog pores and contribute to acne development.

Comedone

A general term for a clogged pore, including both blackheads (open comedones) and whiteheads (closed comedones).

Corneocytes

Dead, flattened keratinocytes that form the outermost layer of the skin, creating a protective and hydration-regulating barrier.

Cosmetic skin type

A practical categorization describing how the skin behaves based on oiliness, dryness, and sensitivity, guiding skincare choices.

Cream

A thicker, water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsion that provides intense hydration.

Critical wavelength

A measurement of a sunscreen’s UVA protection. A critical wavelength above 370 nanometers qualifies a product as broad spectrum under U.S. FDA guidelines.

Cystic acne

A severe form of acne characterized by deep, painful, pus-filled cysts that can cause scarring.

D

Dalton

A unit of molecular weight; used in the 500 Dalton Rule for skin penetration.

Dehydrated skin

A skin condition characterized by a lack of water in the stratum corneum. Unlike dry skin, which lacks oil, dehydrated skin can affect all skin types and is caused by a compromised barrier.

Dehydration

Temporary loss of water content in the skin leading to tightness, dullness, and sensitivity.

Dendrites

Branch-like extensions from melanocytes used to transfer melanin to surrounding keratinocytes.

Dermal appendages

Structures in the dermis including hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands, supporting skin’s thermoregulation and protection.

Dermis

The middle layer of the skin providing strength, elasticity, and housing important structures such as blood vessels and nerve endings.

Desquamation

The natural shedding process of dead cells from the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum).

Double cleansing

A cleansing method involving an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser to effectively remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities.

Dry skin

A skin type marked by low sebum production, leading to rough texture, sensitivity, and a compromised moisture barrier.

E

Eccrine sweat glands

Sweat glands distributed throughout the body that regulate temperature through sweat evaporation.

Eczema

A skin condition involving inflammation, dryness, and itching, often resulting from a compromised barrier.

Elastin

A protein responsible for skin elasticity; its degradation contributes to sagging and wrinkle formation.

Emollient

Moisturizing ingredients that smooth the skin by filling spaces between skin cells and reinforcing the skin barrier.

Emulsion

A mixture of oil and water stabilized by emulsifiers. Includes lotions (lighter) and creams (richer), with oil-in-water (lighter) or water-in-oil (richer) structures. Emulsions could be cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens. Emulsion sunscreens offer the highest SPF protection due to even film formation.

Environmental pollution (skin impact)

Pollutants like PM2.5 that damage the skin barrier, contribute to premature aging, and trigger sensitivity.

Epidermal melanin unit

A functional unit consisting of one melanocyte and surrounding keratinocytes, responsible for melanin production and distribution.

Epidermal turnover rate

The process describing the time taken for new keratinocytes to migrate from the basal layer to the surface and shed.

Epidermal Water Loss

Another name for Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), indicating loss of moisture through the skin.

Epidermis

The outermost layer of the skin responsible for protection, hydration control, and barrier functions.

Essence

A hydrating, lightweight product rich in humectants, designed to prepare the skin for better absorption of serums and creams.

Essential Oils

Highly concentrated plant extracts used for fragrance or therapeutic purposes but may irritate sensitive skin.

Eudermic skin

Scientifically balanced skin with optimal hydration, sebum production, and strong barrier functions.

Eumelanin

A form of melanin responsible for brown to black pigmentation providing high UV protection.

Exfoliants (Exfoliating Acids)

Ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, PHAs, and enzymes that loosen bonds between dead skin cells for exfoliation.

Exfoliation

The removal of dead skin cells through physical, chemical, or enzymatic processes to reveal fresher skin.

Extracellular Lipid Matrix

The lipid-based structure surrounding corneocytes that forms the skin’s waterproof barrier.

F

Facial Mist

A water-based spray enriched with hydrating and calming ingredients, used to refresh and moisturize the skin throughout the day.

Facial oil

A lipid-rich product that seals in moisture, often used as the final step in moisturizing routines.

Facial Sebum Zones

Areas of the face characterized by different oil levels, commonly divided into T-zone, U-zone, and O-zone.

Fatty Acids

Lipids naturally found in skin supporting barrier function and hydration, include linoleic and oleic acids.

Fatty Alcohols

Fatty components used in skincare for emollient effects and stability, different from drying alcohols.

Ferulic acid

An antioxidant that enhances the stability of vitamins C and E and provides protective and brightening benefits.

Fibroblasts

Cells in the dermis that synthesize collagen, elastin, and other critical skin structural proteins.

Filaggrin

A structural protein whose breakdown products contribute to the skin’s natural moisturizing factors.

Flare-up

A sudden worsening of skin conditions such as acne or eczema, often triggered by stress or external irritants.

Foaming agent (surfactant)

Ingredients used in cleansers to create foam; harsh agents may damage the barrier, while mild types are gentler.

Foaming cleanser

A water-based cleanser that produces lather; should be gentle and pH-balanced to avoid disrupting the barrier.

G

Gallic acid

A polyphenolic antioxidant found in plants offering anti-inflammatory and brightening benefits.

Gel cleansers

Water-based cleansers with a gel consistency, ideal for oily or acne-prone skin types.

Gel cream

A hybrid moisturizer combining the hydration of a cream with the lightweight texture of a gel.

Gel sunscreen

Lightweight sunscreen formats that absorb quickly and are favored by those with oily or acne-prone skin.

Gluconolactone

A polyhydroxy acid (PHA) known for gentle exfoliation, antioxidant properties, and high tolerance in sensitive or acid-intolerant skin. It hydrates while smoothing texture.

Glycerin

Also listed as glycerol, glyceryl behenate, or batyl alcohol. A powerful, skin-identical humectant that draws water from the environment or deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum. It helps improve hydration, supports barrier function, and is well-tolerated across all skin types.

Glycolic acid

An AHA derived from sugarcane with the smallest molecular size, allowing deep penetration. It exfoliates, stimulates collagen, and fades hyperpigmentation.

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)

A family of large, hydrating sugar molecules found in the dermis. They include hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulfate, supporting skin volume, hydration, and repair.

H

Hair follicle

A dermal structure that anchors hair and supports oil and sweat gland function. Metabolically active, it is often linked with sebaceous and sweat glands, forming a pilosebaceous unit.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL)

Known as “good” cholesterol, HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from tissues and supports overall metabolic health, including skin function.

Humectant

A hygroscopic ingredient that attracts and binds water to the upper layers of skin, improving hydration. Humectants are essential for managing dehydration and supporting barrier function without adding weight or occlusion. Examples include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, urea, and panthenol.

Hyaluronic acid (HA)

A naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in the skin. In skincare, it functions as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture to maintain hydration, elasticity, and barrier support.

Hybrid sunscreens

Multifunctional products that combine sunscreen with skincare benefits, such as moisturization or tint. Convenient but must be applied in sufficient quantity to provide effective sun protection.

Hydrating

A term used to describe products that help maintain moisture levels in the skin. Often associated with humectants that support both oily and dry skin types.

Hydrating toner

A type of toner designed to replenish moisture and support the acid mantle. Typically free of alcohol and suitable for daily use.

Hydration

The water content of the stratum corneum. Healthy hydration supports elasticity, barrier integrity, and skin comfort. Affected by product use, climate, and internal factors.

Hydration status

A measure of how well the skin retains water. Healthy hydration depends on low transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and a functional barrier.

Hydrocarbons

A class of occlusive ingredients that include petrolatum and mineral oil. They are highly effective at preventing moisture loss but should be used carefully in oily or acne-prone skin.

Hydroquinone

A powerful depigmenting agent that inhibits melanin production. Effective for melasma and dark spots, typically used under medical supervision.

Hyperpigmentation

A common skin concern characterized by the appearance of darkened areas of skin caused by excess melanin production. It can result from sun exposure, inflammation, or hormonal changes. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) often follows acne and is treated with brightening agents.

Hypoallergenic

A marketing term suggesting a product is unlikely to cause allergic reactions. The term is not strictly regulated, so ingredient awareness is still necessary for sensitive users.

Hypodermis

Also called the subcutaneous layer, this innermost layer of the skin is composed mainly of adipose tissue and connective tissue. It provides insulation, energy storage, and cushioning.

Hypopigmentation

Lightening of the skin due to reduced melanin or melanocyte activity. May occur after injury, inflammation, or skin conditions like vitiligo.

I

Immune barrier

The skin’s network of immune cells, including Langerhans cells and dendritic cells, which defend against pathogens and regulate inflammation.

Inflammatory acne

A form of acne characterized by red, swollen, and often painful lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts.

Inorganic (mineral) UV filters

Physical filters such as zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) that reflect, scatter, and absorb UV radiation. Highly photostable and less likely to irritate sensitive skin.

Irritation threshold

The minimum concentration at which an ingredient begins to provoke an adverse skin reaction. Sensitive skin has a lower irritation threshold.

J

Jojoba oil

A noncomedogenic oil that mimics human sebum, making it an ideal emollient for dry patches on combination skin.

K

Keratin

A structural protein produced by keratinocytes, providing strength and resilience to the epidermis.

Keratinization

The process of transforming keratinocytes into corneocytes. During this process the keratinocytes flatten, lose their nuclei, and become densely packed with keratin and lipids.

Keratinocytes

The predominant cell type in the epidermis, responsible for producing keratin and forming the skin’s protective layers.

Keratolytics

Agents that promote exfoliation and soften keratin buildup, helping to unclog pores and reduce comedones.

Kojic acid

A tyrosinase inhibitor derived from fermented rice or fungi. Used to brighten skin and reduce sunspots and melasma.

L

L-ascorbic acid

The purest and most potent form of vitamin C, known for its antioxidant and brightening effects on the skin.

Lactic acid

A mild alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and natural moisturizing factor (NMF) component that functions as both an exfoliant and a humectant, ideal for treating dehydrated skin.

Langerhans cells

Immune cells located in the stratum spinosum of the epidermis that detect and respond to pathogens, playing a role in skin immunity.

Lanolin

A natural occlusive derived from sheep’s wool, known for its deeply moisturizing properties but also potential allergenicity.

Lipid barrier

Also known as the extracellular lipid matrix, refers to the skin’s essential mixture of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids that prevents moisture loss and shields against irritants.

Lipodystrophy

A condition characterized by abnormal distribution of body fat, often leading to visible facial fat loss and changes in skin appearance.

Lipolytic enzymes

Break down sebum components within sebaceous glands. Their activity influences sebum quality and may contribute to inflammatory skin conditions.

Lotion

A lightweight oil-in-water emulsion that absorbs quickly into the skin. Commonly used for normal to oily or combination skin types.

Lymphatic circulation

The movement of lymph fluid through the dermis and hypodermis, helping remove waste, regulate immunity, and reduce swelling.

M

Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP)

A stable, water-soluble form of vitamin C. Brightens skin, supports collagen production, and offers antioxidant protection with minimal irritation risk.

Maltobionic acid

A gentle polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that hydrates the skin, improves elasticity, and reduces pigmentation with low risk of irritation.

Mandelic acid

An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with a larger molecular weight. Penetrates the skin more slowly, offering gentle exfoliation suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Massage cream

A rich, emollient product designed for prolonged massage, enhancing skin hydration and improving circulation.

Mast cells

Immune cells located in the dermis. They release histamine during allergic reactions and are involved in inflammatory skin responses.

Matrikines

Small peptides that regulate skin cell activity, stimulating the production of collagen, elastin, and other dermal proteins for improved skin firmness and elasticity.

Mattifying

Describes the ability of a product or ingredient to absorb excess oil and reduce shine, making it ideal for oily or combination skin types.

Mechanical exfoliation

Uses physical particles, brushes, or scrubs to remove dead skin cells. Should be used cautiously to avoid irritation, especially in sensitive or reactive skin.

Melanin

The pigment produced by melanocytes that gives color to skin, hair, and eyes. Also plays a protective role by absorbing UV radiation.

Melanin transfer

The process by which melanin is transferred from melanocytes to surrounding keratinocytes, where it becomes visible as pigmentation.

Melano-competent skin

Higher levels of melanin, providing better natural UV protection but potentially leading to reduced vitamin D synthesis.

Melano-compromised skin

Lower melanin levels, making it more vulnerable to sunburn and photoaging but more efficient in producing vitamin D.

Melanocytes

Specialized cells located in the stratum basale of the epidermis. They produce melanin to protect against UV radiation.

Melanosomes

Organelles within melanocytes where melanin is synthesized, stored, and transferred to keratinocytes for visible pigmentation.

Merkel cells

Neuroendocrine cells found in the stratum basale, responsible for light touch and pressure sensation.

Metabolic syndrome

A cluster of metabolic disorders that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar.

Micellar water

A water-based wipe-off cleanser composed of micelles that lift away dirt, oil, and makeup without harsh scrubbing.

Micelles

Tiny clusters of surfactant molecules suspended in water that attract and lift away oil, dirt, and makeup.

Microbiome (skin biota)

The community of microorganisms living on the skin that contribute to immune function and overall skin health.

Microneedling

A cosmetic in-office procedure using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and reducing scarring.

Micronized/nano particles

Tiny versions of mineral UV filters that reduce white cast and improve spreadability in sunscreen products.

Microvascular circulation

The network of small blood vessels in the dermis and hypodermis that supplies oxygen, nutrients, and supports skin health and healing.

Mineral oil

A highly occlusive ingredient forming a barrier on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss. Noncomedogenic and protective.

Mineral sunscreen

A sunscreen containing inorganic UV filters like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that reflect and scatter UV rays.

Mineral UV filters

Inorganic UV filters such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that reflect and scatter UV radiation.

Moisture barrier

The component of the skin’s barrier function composed of lipids, sebum, and corneocytes that prevents water loss and protects against irritants.

Moisturizer

A skincare product designed to hydrate the skin, typically containing a combination of humectants, emollients, and occlusives.

Montmorillonite (French green clay)

A highly absorbent clay used in skincare masks to regulate oil production, minimize pores, and purify the skin.

N

Natural moisturizing factor (NMF)

A collection of water-binding components found in the stratum corneum that help maintain skin hydration.

Neural barrier

The skin’s sensory network that detects stimuli and transmits signals to regulate sensation and protective responses.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

A versatile skincare active known for strengthening the skin barrier, regulating oil production, improving texture, and brightening pigmentation.

Noncomedogenic

Indicates that a product is unlikely to clog pores, making it safer for oily or acne-prone skin types.

Nonionic surfactants

Mild cleansing agents that carry no electrical charge and cleanse with minimal irritation, ideal for sensitive or dry skin.

Normal skin

A balanced skin type characterized by stable oil production, hydration, minimal sensitivity, and few imperfections.

O

O-zone

The area surrounding the mouth, often evaluated separately in combination skin assessments for dryness or oiliness.

Occlusive

A type of moisturizing agent that forms a physical barrier to prevent transepidermal water loss.

Occlusive ingredient

Substances like petrolatum, mineral oil, and butters that create a moisture-sealing barrier on the skin’s surface.

Oil cleansers

Oil-based cleansers that dissolve sebum, sunscreen, and makeup. Essential for double cleansing routines.

Oil-free

A formulation trait indicating a product contains no oils, preferred for oily or acne-prone skin types.

Oil-in-water emulsion (O/W)

A lighter formulation where oil droplets are suspended in water. Common in lotions and suitable for most skin types.

Oily skin

A skin type characterized by high sebum production, resulting in shine, enlarged pores, and increased acne risk.

Open comedone (blackhead)

A clogged pore that remains open to the surface and oxidizes, appearing dark (commonly called a blackhead).

Organic UV filters
